How do we tan?
Tanning takes place in the skin's outermost layer, the epidermis, with special cells called melanocytes. When exposed to UV-B light (short wave ultraviolet), melanocytes produce the pigment, melanin. The pinkish melanin travels up through the epidermis and is absorbed by other skin cells. When exposed to UV-A light (longer wave), melanin oxidizes or darkens. This is your skin's way of protecting itself against too much UV light. This process is the same whether you are tanning indoors or out.
Why does a tan fade?
Cells in the epidermis are constantly reproducing and pushing older cells upward toward the surface of your skin, where they are sloughed off in about one month. As your skin replaces its cells, the cells laden with melanin are removed. So the tanning process must continue with the new cells. Ask one of our tanning consultants on how best to maintain your tan.
Lip and Eye Protection
Lips don't produce melanin and eyelids are too thin to block UV. That's why it's important to wear lip balms with sunscreen and protective goggles.. You can avoid "Raccoon Eyes" by gently adjusting your goggles while you tan, but never remove them completely or using our temporary eye wear option.
What if I am on medication?
Some medications can cause reactions with UV light. If you are taking any medications, please let your doctor know you're tanning and advise our tanning consultants so they can make the appropriate changes to your exposure schedule.
Why am I always asked if I have my eyewear?
Sun Seekers Tanning Salon requires that you wear proper protective eyewear when tanning. We sell both regular and temporary goggles at our location. • Your eye lids are too thin to block out the UV rays, and they can penetrate a towel so it does not help to just cover your eyes either
Do I need to make an appointment to tan?
No and appointment is not required, but it is recommended to ensure that your bed is reserved for the time that you want.
